It assesses a client’s ability to handle objects differing in size, weight and shape and therefore can be considered to be an arm-specific measure of activity limitation. The area of assessment includes “Activities of Daily Living”, “Coordination”, “Dexterity” and “Upper Extremity Function”. It includes 19 items related to four subscales: grasp, grip, pinch, and gross movement. It is administered according to a hierarchical Guttman scale, according to levels of difficulty.

It includes two subscales measuring 16 motor skills and 20 process skills. A certified therapist is required to perform this evaluation.

The original version contains 10-items measuring common ADL activities including: feeding, bathing, grooming, dressing, bowel control, bladder control, toileting, chair transfer, ambulation and stair climbing. The difference betwen the MBI and original version (above) is the rating scale.
