The NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUSMed) recognises the vital role that our community of postdoctoral fellows play in lifting medical sciences research, leading research teams and nurturing our younger researchers in the path of science. Given the diverse backgrounds and expertise of our postdoctoral fellows, NUSMed recognises the need to support their growth and maximise their potential to the fullest.

To create a more holistic postdoctoral experience, the REINVENT programme was established by the NUSMed Office of the Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA). REINVENT provides a framework and opportunities for professional and personal development of our postdoctoral fellows to nurture the growth of future-ready postdoctoral fellows.

The Programme comprising the core, elective and practicum components, would need to be completed within two years.

CORE COURSES

The core courses will be on the following areas:

    1. Mentoring,

    2. Leadership,

    3. Communication

Participants will be expected to complete a short reflective assignment after each workshop on what they have learnt and how they hope to practice what they have learnt in their roles.

Members of the NUSMed Postdoctoral Association will be offered all three NUSMed core workshops which are sourced from prestigious vendors and fully paid by OPA in recognition of your service to the NUSMed postdoctoral community. The rest of the NUSMed postdocs who are not serving in PDA, will be eligible to attend one of these sponsored workshops.

ELECTIVES

We note that postdocs have diverse needs and interests. Based on needs assessment, we have identified three critical areas to channel more resources to support the development of our postdocs. These three areas, namely teaching, developing research collaborations and expertise, and business & entrepreneurship have been crafted into three electives.

a) Teaching

Participants with an interest in classroom teaching are required to attend at least two teaching related workshops provided by NUSMed or Centre for Development of Teaching & Learning (CDTL). To apply their skills, they can choose one of the following option:

1. Postdocs can take on opportunities that may come by from departments to teach tutorials and practicals.

2. Postdocs could also work with faculty members to help create learning materials or work on education research projects to learn more about education research. Please feel free to source out for such opportunities. We will also provide a list of available slots as opportunities open up.

To view the list of courses you can teach in, kindly click HERE. If you are interested in teaching any of the slots, kindly email the course coordinator at the email provided on the website and CC us at nusmedopa@nus.edu.sg, with an email subject heading: Teaching_REINVENT : Course code (XXXXXXX)

b) Research

Postdocs who choose the research elective are required to attend at least two scientific/grant writing and/or patents-related workshops. They can then go on to select 1 of the following options:

1. Conduct an expert seminar. (e.g. They may have expertise in creating scientific illustrations. They could conduct a workshop for postdocs, graduate/FYP students);

2. Building bridges: Postdocs & Junior Clinicians joint projects - Moot any level of collaboration with a clinician (preferably residents/Associate Consultants) and develop tangible outcomes or long-term plans

If you are interested in exploring the postdocs and junior clinicians joint projects or in conducting an expert seminar, kindly email us at nusmedopa@nus.edu.sg with an email subject heading: Research_REINVENT

c) Business & Entrepreneurship

Lean LaunchPad (LLP) is a programme modelled after the highly successful US National Science Foundation I-Corps programme, now widely adopted by leading universities in the US.  Participants of the LLP program have demonstrated a changed mindset with positive impact in new knowledge gained and increased confidence in identifying which of several different pathways to commercialisation to pursue. We hope this elective will further drive innovations at NUS Medicine.

  1. Join LLP as an Entrepreneurial Lead for a two day boot camp + 10 week programme (weekly 10-15 hours commitment from within or outside working hours). Supervisor's endorsement is needed.

If you are interested in joining as an Entrepreneurial Lead, kindly email us at nusmedopa@nus.edu.sg with an email subject heading: B&E_REINVENT. Joining LLP as an entrepreneurial lead will also fulfill the requirements of the Practicum due to the heavy commitment.

ELIGIBILITY

All NUS Medicine research fellows who have at least 6 months of post-doctoral experience at NUS, and who have at least 1.5 years left on your contract can apply. Research will continue being the priority of all participants.

RECOGNITION

Participants who complete the full REINVENT programme will receive a certificate of completion of the REINVENT programme from the school.

For all further enquires on the programme, kindly contact us at nusmedopa@nus.edu.sg.
