Gastrointestinal diseases and microbiome
Gut inflammation and cancers account for more than half of all gastrointestinal diseases. Development of these pathologies involve multiple factors such as host genetics, immune responses and environmental factors. In addition, alterations of various cellular signalling processes are implicated in every aspect of disease pathogenesis. More recently, gut microbiome was shown to be important for the maintenance of overall health. Other than gut diseases, altered composition of gut microbes is also associated with illnesses such as diabetes, liver and neurodegenerative disorders. Currently, we focus on understanding the complex cellular signalling that influence colorectal cancer progression, in order to identify potential targets for therapeutic intervention. At the same time, we work closely with clinicians to examine the correlation of gut microbiota with disease development in patients.
