Department Educational Excellence Programme (DEEP)

The business of DEEP is to rethink and reinvent education, to master challenges involved with the current pandemic, and promote teaching excellence in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology.

DEEP was set up by our Head of Department, A/Prof Kevin SW Tan, during the reorganization of the research and educational structure at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. As a result of this restructuring process, Departments within the School are now in charge of all educational matters.

DEEP is one of the three strategies to achieve the Vision for the Department: "We will make a major healthcare impact on the world stage by being a global leader in microbiology and immunology education through transformative learning experiences to develop graduates with innovative, insightful, and socially conscious mind-sets."

DEEP's strategic objectives are

  1. To develop innovative models of teaching and learning: Therefore, we leverage on technology to better engage students and promote active learning. We set up professional studios to enable blended learning, hybrid teaching, and E-practicals.
  2. To broaden student learning and experience: To achieve that, DEEP provides holistic education by focussing on nurturing values and soft skills development. That includes the involvement of students in community projects, social interest gatherings, as well as training and awarding schemes.
  3. To lead in healthcare life long learning: We aim to be a thought-leader in microbiology and immunology education in the context of adult learning in Singapore and internationally.
