Two scientists from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore ( NUS Medicine) have been recognised at the Nature Awards for Mentoring in Science for their work in supporting early career researchers.
The mid-career achievement award was jointly presented to Professor Koh Woon Puay, Director of the Clinician-Scientist Development Unit and Professor Tai E Shyong, from the Department of Medicine at NUS Medicine.
Joint mid-career award winner Professor Koh Woon Puay, who is also from the Healthy Longevity Translational Research Programme at NUS Medicine, was described as “a mentor for life”, by those who nominated her. The judges were won over by her caring, constructive, candid and personal style of mentoring. Prof Koh’s dual focus on the importance of collaborations and women in scientific leadership stood out as highlights of her mentoring approach.
The second recipient of the mid-career award, Professor Tai E Shyong, sees mentorship as a privilege. His tailor-made approach to each mentoring opportunity which leverages each mentee’s unique skill sets to ensure that it complements those of others, wowed the judges. Prof Tai’s mentoring style focuses on creating an environment that enables others to thrive and he is a strong advocate of providing encouragement to challenge and stretch his mentees’ abilities.
Now in its 18th year, the Nature Awards for Mentoring in Science are awarded for outstanding scientific mentorship, recognising scientists that have supported early career researchers. Each year the award invites mentees to nominate mentors that have made a significant contribution to their career development, focusing on a different country or region to shine a spotlight on the development of science in all corners of the world.
Congratulations to Professor Koh Woon Puay and Professor Tai E Shyong on this significant achievement!
