Beyond Medicine Programme

About the Programme

The Beyond Medicine programme is a research-focused initiative for our second-year medical students to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and mindsets in becoming discerning research consumers and meaningful contributors to the clinical field. Through this programme, students will not only learn about the various aspects of research, such as its paradigms, research types and techniques, study designs, and more, but also gain important insights and awareness of the diverse research programmes and offerings within NUS Medicine through the research festival.

Objectives

The Beyond Medicine programme aims to equip undergraduates with an important understanding of different research principles and approaches, as well as to expose them to the myriad of research opportunities within the school. Its key objectives for students are:

  • To understand the purpose, paradigm and process of research and innovation
  • Ask good questions, generate ideas, appraise evidence and apply thinking processes
  • Consider worldviews, perspective-taking and apply methodologies, approaches or techniques relevant in research
  • Draw connections across various research components to understand how to conduct good research
  • Identify and harness opportunities for research collaboration through networking

Research Festival

The research festival is an annual event unique to the Beyond Medicine programme that brings together students and staff from the various Translational Research Programmes (TRPs) and Faculty Research Centres (FRCs) at NUS Medicine. The festival aims to provide a dynamic platform for the TRPs and FRCs to not only showcase their research and share what they do, but also for students to learn more about the school’s research efforts, engage with researchers directly, build networks, and discover opportunities for research collaboration.

Through the research festival, students are strongly encouraged to take the next step and act on their research curiosities and interests. Students may use their research project(s) to fulfill requirements in various research-related work, such as the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP), MBBS Electives, or even compete in university level awards such as the Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Prize (OURP).
