Foreword by Research Director

Medicine advances when important clinical questions lead to discoveries that change how we understand disease and care for our patients. As the Department of Medicine looks to the future, our ambition is to pursue research that matters — research grounded in the needs of our patients, driven by scientific curiosity, and capable of translating discovery into better medicine.

Our strength lies in the breadth of our clinical expertise and the diversity of questions arising from our patients. Increasingly, the most important challenges in medicine cross traditional boundaries. We therefore seek to bring clinicians, scientists, trainees and partners together to ask difficult questions, challenge established thinking and develop new approaches to diagnosis, treatment and care.

We are committed to building an environment in which ambitious research can flourish. This means supporting clinician-scientists and the next generation of researchers, investing in the infrastructure and technologies needed to pursue innovative ideas, and creating pathways for discoveries to move from the laboratory to patients. Emerging fields such as molecular profiling, artificial intelligence, digital health and precision medicine offer powerful new opportunities — but their value ultimately lies in their ability to address unmet clinical needs.

As an academic medical department within NUS and NUHS, we have the opportunity to connect discovery with the health priorities of Singapore and the region, while contributing knowledge of international relevance. Ultimately, research excellence is not defined simply by the number of papers or grants we produce, but by what our discoveries make possible. Our aspiration is to turn important clinical questions into discoveries, and discoveries into meaningful advances in medicine.
