Programme Highlights

Precision medicine leverages on insights derived from the analysis of high-throughput datasets containing multiple parameters.

The Executive Certificate in Applied Statistics for Precision Medicine aims to provide foundational knowledge and skills for learners to apply appropriate statistical approaches in evaluating and analysing high-throughput datasets in precision medicine. Learners will develop the skills in designing experiments based on the statistical principles, evaluating data quality, analysing and interpreting high throughput data for precision medicine.

Who Should Attend

Individuals who are currently working in healthcare, research or diagnostic lab, biotechnology, pharmacology, academic medicine or education fields.

Course Structure

  • To attain an ‘Executive Certificate in Applied Statistics for Precision Medicine’, participants will have to sign up for the ‘PHM5003: Applied Statistics for Precision Medicine’ individual academic course in the NUS Online Application portal. 
  • Application period for Semester 2 (AY23/24): 28 Sep 2023 – 5 Nov 2023.
  • Registration for this course has been extended to 23 Nov 2023. To register and gain access to the NUS Online Application portal, please contact mscphm@nus.edu.sg.
  • The Executive Certificate in Applied Statistics for Precision Medicine is one of two executive certificates that stacks towards a Graduate Certificate in Big Data Analytics in Precision Medicine.

PHM5003: Applied Statistics for Precision Medicine

Benefits of Attending

Learners should able to:

  • Explain principles of statistical modelling of data for precision medicine
  • Explain the challenges of analyzing high throughput datasets for precision medicine
  • Design high throughput experiments in precision medicine to minimize confounders and increase statistical power to detect differences
  • Evaluate data quality (batch effects, missing data, noise) and perform preprocessing where appropriate (batch correction, imputation, normalization)
  • Analyze high throughput data to find and evaluate differences in samples using appropriate statistical tools.

  2. Overview of basic statistics
    a) Probability distributions (count and continuous) for biological data
    b) Hypothesis testing (frequentist and Bayesian approaches)

  4. Statistical principles for high throughput data in precision medicine
    a) Design of high throughput experiments for precision medicine and sample size calculation
    b) Evaluation of data quality
         – Batch effect detection and correction
         – Missing data and imputation
         – Normalization approaches (e.g., quantile normalization/variance stabilization)
    c) Approaches for handling m << p datasets
         – Dimensionality reduction
         – Feature selection

    d) Approaches for controlling for multiple hypothesis tests (e.g., FWER/FDR)
  5. Case studies of analysis in precision medicine
    a) Variant calling analysis and prioritization

Pre-Requisites and Assessment

Prerequisites:

  • Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree and may be required to show relevant work experience. Applicants with other qualifications and experience may be considered on a case by case basis, subject to approval by the school.
  • Basic knowledge of R language.

Assessment:

  • Project work

 

Awards and Certification

Learners who complete the PHM5003 academic course will receive a Certificate of Completion and an Executive Certificate in Applied Statistics for Precision Medicine.

Points to note

  • Course submission closes on 5 Nov 2023 (Sunday) 23:59HR (strictly no extension will be given). No payment is collected now, as the courses are ongoing registration.
  • As part of the submission requirement for academic courses, please prepare to upload your NRIC (front and back) / transcript / Certification during the application.
  • All applicants will be notified of the application outcome (offered/rejected) ~ 4 weeks after registration closing. You will need to accept/reject the module offering by then & the school’s administrative & finance team will contact all applicants to proceed with administration & corp billing/payment application in stages.
  • Courses are not offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. A committee will review all applications base on the eligibility criteria.
  • Student Services Fee of $25.46 is payable for the semester after enrolling in the course.
