Obstetrics & Gynaecology Student Internship Programme (SIP)

Goal

To provide students with hands-on training in the management of Obstetrics and Gynaecology patients by acting as student interns. This also gives the opportunity to enable students to interact with other health care givers in a "team approach" in delivering healthcare.

Overview

The duration of SIP is 6 weeks. Student interns will become an integral part of the patient-care team and will function like interns in the wards. Each student intern will also go on call during the programme and will also be issued ID access to CPSS System.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a current Year 4 Medical Student with Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.
  • Passed the 4th Professional MBBS Examination. Students required to do remedial posting in O&G will be automatically withdrawn from the programme.
  • Be able to commit to the full 6 weeks for the O&G Student Internship Programme.

Structure of SIP Programme

  1. During the period of student internship, pre-final year students will be attached to a team under a consultant and directly supervised by the team registrar assisted by the MO and HO.
  2. The student interns will function as an integral part of the patient-care team, but under close supervision.
  3. Student interns shall get to know the head nurse / ward clerk and adapt quickly to the ward routine.
  4. Student interns will be expected to participate in all ward rounds, and to make student entries in the clinical documentation system.
  5. Student interns will help clerk new cases admitted to their team allocated by the Supervisor. They will make student entries in the clinical documentation system, in the appropriate place in the clinical documentation system, with the permission from the supervisors. This will be reviewed by the senior staff.
  6. Student interns must write daily clinical progress notes for his/her patient/s and be responsible for following up and obtaining results of investigations done.
  7. Student interns should indicate in their own notes what investigations/treatment would be appropriate. The Supervisor will check this list and will order the actual tests or treatment. Under no circumstances are student to order drugs or directly order investigation.
  8. Student interns will assist in or perform procedures under direct supervision.
  9. For more advanced procedures, student interns are restricted to an observatory role.
  10. Student interns will go on call with their respective teams. They will be expected to clerk patients and assist the house officers or medical officers on- call.
