Programme Overview

Within the healthcare system, healthcare professionals play multiple roles; one pivotal role is that of an educator. To serve effectively in the role, healthcare professional educators need pedagogical preparation in curriculum development, teaching strategies and evaluation methods. This programme is designed to provide healthcare professionals with a strong foundation on pedagogical preparation in curriculum development, teaching strategies and evaluation methods. It affords opportunities for participants to design teaching and learning activities to accommodate different learning characteristics, styles and goals while leveraging on technology.

The Singapore Nursing Board (SNB) mandates that all teaching members involved in nursing education of both the pre- and post-registration nursing programmes must have a formal preparation in teaching and learning. It is also a requirement by the National Nursing Academy (NNA) at the Ministry of Health (MOH) that all nurses working in the healthcare institutions involved in work-based education and assessment must have formal training in teaching and learning.

Its courses are offered on a part-time mode and adopts a stackable courses approach, which consists of Certificates that will stack up towards a Graduate Certificate. The normal and maximum candidature is one (1) and three (3) years respectively for the full programme.

Aims of Programme

The programme aims to broaden the key learning constructs as well as deepen and advance a healthcare professional’s skills in teaching and learning. Upon completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  • conduct a learning analysis;
  • apply principles of effective content design;
  • apply principles of assessment; and
  • develop a lesson plan.

On completion of the programme, graduates’ professional confidence and competence to effectively facilitate teaching and learning within a variety of settings will be enhanced.

Pitched to meet the needs and demands of current educational training and development, this programme places emphasis on current trends in adult learning and pedagogical approaches in different settings. Through the programme learning, participants will be equipped to conduct critical inquiry and investigation within and beyond the area of teaching and learning.
