Bursary recipients at NUS Nursing prove juggling career and degree studies is entirely possible

27 March 2025

Balancing work, family, and your personal life is no easy feat—especially for nurses who dedicate their lives to caring for others. But what if you could upskill without putting your career on hold?

The part-time Bachelor of Science (Nursing Practice) degree programme at NUS Nursing offers working nurses with a diploma the chance to take their skills to the next level, all while managing their professional and personal commitments. Designed with flexibility in mind, the programme equips nurses with advanced knowledge and leadership skills—with the added support of financial aid options to boost the journey.

We sat down with four students from the programme to find out how they took the leap with NUS Nursing.

Irene Kuek Hui Meng Bursary

What’s your role and designation?

Hello, I am Asyiqin, a Staff Nurse from NTUC Health Jurong Spring Nursing Home.

Hello Asyiqin! Why did you decide to enrol in the part-time Bachelor of Science (Nursing Practice) degree programme at NUS Nursing?

Caring for my late grandmother really opened my eyes to the importance of healthcare, and I chose to enrol in the part-time BSc (Nursing Practice) programme at NUS as a result. This course has the best of both worlds—it offers a balance of flexibility without compromising on quality education, allowing me to grow as a nurse and enabling me to apply what I learn in real-time at work.

Equipped with the skills and knowledge from NUS Nursing, I’m able to make more impactful contributions to Singapore’s healthcare system and provide better care for my patients. I’m excited to take this step in upgrading myself and transforming into a better nurse.

Your passion is really inspiring. Have you faced any challenges on this journey so far?

Juggling work, studies and my family has not been a smooth-sailing journey—it definitely took a toll on both my mental and physical health. The Irene Kuek Hui Meng Bursary makes it possible for me to continue pursuing my passion for nursing without the added stress of financial hardship.

That’s great! Anything to share with current nurses looking at the programme?

If you’re considering the BSc (NP) at NUS Nursing, don’t worry too much—it’s totally doable. The programme is tailored for us full-time nurses, so we can learn at our own pace while gaining hands-on experience from work. Feeling uncertain is normal, but believe me, having the help of the teachers and classmates makes it all manageable. Just take it step by step, and you’ll do great.

This is—undoubtedly—a fulfilling experience that will lead you to a range of opportunities for your nursing career. All the best!

Mohammad Ashraf Bin Salamat

Hi Ashraf, what’s your role and designation?

I just stepped down from my role as a clinic nurse at Raffles Medical, and will be starting a new position as a clinic nurse with Minmed in July.

Looking forward to that! Why did you take up the programme?

I decided to enrol in the part-time Bachelor of Science (Nursing Practice) degree programme at NUS Nursing, because I enjoy the flexibility the programme provides. I also feel confident knowing that graduating with this degree will take me further in my nursing career.

How has the programme and its opportunities been for you?

I’m grateful for this bursary as it has allowed me to concentrate on my studies without the need to worry about my finances. If you’re considering the programme, my advice would be—just go for it! It may be tough at times, but it will all be worth it in the end.
