Graduate Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control

Programmes

Application

Application for courses starting in AY2026/2027 Semester 1, August 2026 will open from May to June 2026.

Programme Overview

The increasing complexity of healthcare systems, the emergence of new infectious diseases, and the global threat from antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections have contributed to morbidity, mortality, and increased healthcare costs in healthcare facilities. This underscored the critical need for trained infection preventionists who can lead and implement evidence-based and innovative infection prevention and control (IPC) strategies.

World Health Organisation (WHO) and Ministry of Health (MOH) are emphasising on the need for trained professionals to lead IPC related initiatives in healthcare institutions.

To address such demand, the Graduate Certificate for Infection Prevention and Control is developed in collaboration with industry partners to ensure content relevance and feasibility of the work-study approach implementation.

Aims of Programme

Upon completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of infection prevention and control principles and practices.
  2. Lead and implement infection prevention programs in various healthcare settings.
  3. Design and implement innovative strategies to prevent and control infections.
  4. Conduct effective training and workshops for healthcare personnel at all levels from senior management to housekeepers.
  5. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient safety and promote safer healthcare.
  6. Conduct epidemiological research and contribute to the body of knowledge in infection prevention and control.

Programme Structure

The programme consists of 3 courses, offered over 2 semesters. The structure allows for flexibility and recognition of learning at each stage:
  1. Completion of All 3 Courses:
    • Upon successful completion of all 3 courses with a minimum GPA of 2.00 (cumulative across all courses), students will be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control.
  2. Partial Completion (Exit Before All 3 Courses Completed):
    • If a student exits the programme before completing all 3 courses, they will be awarded a Certificate of Competency for each course they have successfully completed, provided they achieve a minimum GPA of 2.00 for that course.
  3. Stacking Towards Certification:
    • Each course completed with the required GPA contributes toward the overall Graduate Certificate.
    • Students who initially exit early but later return to complete the remaining courses (within the specified maximum candidature period) can stack previously earned Certificates of Competency towards the Graduate Certificate, as long as the cumulative GPA requirement is met.

Please see below how these 3 courses are stackable for attainment of graduate certification:
