Dr Cheng Ling Jie is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford, supported by the prestigious Singapore Teaching and Academic Research Talent (START) Award from the Ministry of Education. He also holds a joint academic appointment as a Senior Tutor at the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS Nursing), and the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (NUS Public Health), both at the National University of Singapore.
Dr Cheng graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) (Honours) from NUS Nursing, supported by the Alexandra Health Nursing Scholarship. He subsequently advanced his academic journey by earning a Master of Public Health and a PhD in Public Health from NUS Public Health. During his doctoral studies, he was awarded the esteemed Tan Kah Kee Postgraduate Scholarship in recognition of his academic and research excellence.
Before transitioning to academia, Dr Cheng acquired extensive clinical experience at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, where he worked across acute care, surgical units, and specialised geriatric services. Beyond clinical responsibilities, he served as an executive committee member of the Nursing Research Unit, where he spearheaded evidence-based practice initiatives, led impactful research projects, and mentored nursing staff in their professional growth.
Dr Cheng’s research focuses on Health Economics and Outcomes Research, encapsulated in the acronym “VALUE”, with a commitment to advancing healthcare decision-making. He has led or contributed to research projects with funding exceeding SGD 1.14 million and published over 60 high-impact, peer-reviewed articles. He has also advised over 30 undergraduate and 8 postgraduate students on their theses, many of whom have successfully published their research in esteemed journals and presented their findings at international conferences.
As an educator, Dr Cheng teaches Clinical Epidemiology, Applied Research Methods, and Medical Statistics at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels at NUS Nursing and NUS Public Health. His teaching philosophy focuses on fostering critical thinking, promoting evidence-based practices, and the translation of theoretical knowledge into practical healthcare solutions. His commitment to excellence in teaching has been recognised with the Graduate Student Teaching Award from NUS Public Health for two consecutive years, in 2023 and 2024.
Internationally, Dr Cheng is a founding member of the EuroQol PhD Network and an active member of leading professional societies, including the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) and the International Society for Quality of Life Research (ISOQOL). He also serves as a peer reviewer for leading journals, including the International Journal of Nursing Studies, International Journal of Surgery, Value in Health, Clinical Microbiology and Infection, and BMC Medical Research Methodology.
