Project DAMAI

An NUS inter-healthcare assistance and medical aid

Project DAMAI, is an acronym for Delivering Assistance and Medical Aid Internationally.  The team took the first letter of each word and made it into ‘DAMAI’.  Project DAMAI is an inter-healthcare project comprising twenty two NUS undergraduate students from the Nursing, Dentistry, Medicine and Pharmacy.

Annually, the team would  embark on an Overseas Community Involvement Project to Cambodia to deliver health education and screening for the poor villages.  In the AY22/23 June 2023,  the  team will be heading to Baray, Cambodia for their  Overseas Community Involvement Project to provide health education and screening for two villages there.  The beneficiary villagers are from Chataluak and Korkitom, Cambodia.

Project DAMAI’s aims to improve the healthcare needs of those in communities where healthcare services and facilities are inadequate.  The team meets the needs by setting up mobile clinics to provide health screening to the villages as well as delivering health education to the schools.

Project DAMAI also aims to provide opportunities for youth development through service-learning and interacting with villagers through house visitation and lunch preparation for an orphanage.

Apart from providing healthcare and youth developmental services, the team is also looking for ways to help with improving the villages’ infrastructure by painting the exterior facade of Chataluak School.

In June, the team will also be visiting Baray Santuk Referral Hospital to learn more about the healthcare system and culture in Cambodia. This will be followed by a visit to Villageworks Songkem to learn about sustainable social enterprises for people with disabilities.

Lastly, they will visit a start-up, the Sports Centre, to learn about the sports culture which will provide further interaction opportunities with the youths in Cambodia.
