Parenting Interventions in Singapore: Reflections and a Way Forward

Join our host, Research Fellow Dr Jocelyn Chew, in this episode as she speaks with Assoc Prof Shefaly Shorey from the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies on how parents, especially new ones, can be supported in this phase of their lives.

Assoc Prof Shorey’s research focuses on family health, where she designs and develops psychosocial and educational interventions for new parents, women, and children. Her research journey started in 2011 when she and her team did exploratory work using qualitative in-depth interviews and quantitative questionnaire surveys. They engaged with varied populations starting with first-time mothers, then experienced mothers, fathers and even grandparents.

Subsequently, as Assoc Prof Shorey and her team noticed that first-time parents, including fathers, needed support, the subsequent intervention focused on fathers and mothers in the early postpartum or after childbirth period. Following the successful run of the intervention programme, the team’s went on with their third project to support fathers and mothers from pregnancy until 3-months after childbirth.

In this episode, she sheds more light on the intervention programmes, and how technology now plays a part in these initiatives.
