Two BCA Green Mark (Platinum) Awards for the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine!

At this year’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Awards, the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine clinched not one but two Green Mark (Platinum) Awards for MD 4/4A and 9! The Green Mark Platinum is the highest tier accorded for green buildings in Singapore and the award is given in recognition of a developer or building owner’s sustained efforts and outstanding achievement for a sustainable built environment.
There are five key areas in the assessment criteria: energy, water efficiency, environmental protection, indoor environmental quality and other green features and innovation. Some of the environmental friendly features in both buildings include excellent rating Water Efficiency Labeling Scheme (WELS) water fittings (Figure 1), energy efficient lightings such as T5 and LED lighting (Figure 2) that reduce power consumption and motion sensor for all toilets as an effort in energy conservation. In the Medical School, both buildings use Smart Metering technology; enabling the application of energy monitoring and management which constitute one of the fundamental elements of a sustainable ‘green’ building. Every floor is fitted with digital private metering that offers users accurate profile consumption usage.
In addition, MD9 has an energy recovery ventilation system located at the roof top using equipment known as a heat recovery ventilator (HRV), heat exchanger, air exchanger, or air-to-air heat exchanger which employs a counter-flow heat exchanger between the inbound and outbound air flow. The HRV in turn provides fresh air and improved climate control, while also saving energy by reducing heating (and cooling) requirements. MD9 also features aluminum screen modules that blend in aesthetically along with the externally façade of the building, thus providing profound and lasting architectural impression externally.
This year’s BCA Awards saw a total of 293 winners across 10 categories, out of which 177 Green Mark Awards were conferred to organisations for their dedicated efforts in adopting various green building technologies to improve and reduce impact on environment.
