The dangers of e-cigarettes
Published: 05 Jan 2018
The use of e-cigarettes is becoming increasingly popular among youth as an alternative to traditional cigarettes. However, e-cigarettes are not healthier alternative to tobacco cigarettes and could be more harmful. Dr See Kay Choong, assistant professor at NUS Medicine’s Department of Medicine, said that there are many recent studies which showed e-cigarettes containing unknown solvents and flavouring products. When heated and vapourised, liquids of the e-cigarettes may release other dangerous products, such as Formaldehye, which can be cancer causing in the long term.
On the bright side, the number of e-cigarettes being sold or smuggled into Singapore has dropped significantly according to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA). This was attributed to ongoing efforts to clamp down on the sales of electronic device, as well as warnings to public that these products are illegal to be sold and imported. A new ban passed in November 2017 will have laws enforced on the total ban of e-cigarettes in the next coming months.
