The NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS Medicine) would like to congratulate Dr Alfred Kow Wei Chieh on being one of the winners of the Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian (TOYM) Awards 2014!
The awards accord recognitions to individuals whose dedication in their respective fields has resulted in exceptional achievements and significant contributions. This year, more than 100 individuals were nominated and 30 finalists were selected for an interview with a panel of judges in Kuala Lumpur. The top 10 honourees were announced at the award ceremony on 12 November 2014, in the State Hall in Penang.
Dr Alfred Kow, practicing surgeon at the Division of the Surgical Oncology (Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery), National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS), was the award recipient in the “Medical Innovation” category. Strongly interested in liver transplantation as well as minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery for Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic conditions, he has authored or co-authored peer-reviewed journals and published numerous articles on Pancreatic Surgery, Liver Surgery and Biliary Surgery.
In addition, Dr Kow has a keen interest in research activities involving the development of surgical techniques in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery and the outcome of surgical treatment for HPB malignancies. Furthermore, he has been developing research to improve surgical education and training for both undergraduate and postgraduate setting. Many of his research work on education aim to understand the art and science behind training the junior doctors to be excellent surgeons in the future.
On top of his clinical practice and research activities, Dr Kow has been actively involved in undergraduate medical education and post-graduate surgical training as an Assistant Professor at the NUS Medicine since 2012. Being appointed as the Undergraduate Medical Education Director and as one of the core faculty members of the National University Health System (NUHS) General Surgery Residency Program, he is also responsible for the training and education (Surgery) of NUS Medicine’s undergraduate medical students as well as the surgical residents.
