Singapore Neuroscience Association honours prominent Singapore Neuroscientists

The Singapore Neuroscience Association (SNA) honoured prominent neuroscientists during its annual neuroscience symposium on 17th April 2014 at the Centre for Life Sciences (CeLS), NUS.

Chairman for the symposium Associate Professor Gavin Dawe, who is with the NUS Department of Pharmacology welcomed the participants, and SNA President Associate Professor S Thameem Dheen, who is with the NUS Department of Anatomy, briefly highlighted the history and activities of SNA. The symposium was very well received with over hundred attendees.

The SNA lifetime achievement award is presented to eminent scientists who have contributed extensively to the field of neuroscience. This year, SNA honoured Professor Barry Halliwell Deputy President (Research and Technology), Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professor, NUS with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional contribution to neuroscience research. Professor Halliwell, delivered a keynote lecture titled ‘The Wanderings of a Free Radical’. In his thought-provoking lecture, he highlighted the role of free radicals and antioxidants in human disease, particularly brain disorders.

Along with Professor Barry Halliwell SNA also honoured the following neuroscientists:
• Distinguished Neuroscientist Award to Professor Peter Wong Tsun Hon (Department of Pharmacology) for his outstanding contribution to neuroscience research in Singapore.
• Neuroscience Educator Award to Associate Professor Ong Wei Yi (Department of Anatomy) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to neuroscience teaching in Singapore.
