“Smart” programmes that promote health will be a key area that can significantly improve people’s lives by actively encouraging well-being and preventing diseases, said NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan. But developing such programmes, such as devices that track people’s steps, is not just about technological innovation. It is a multi-dimensional issue, which requires the developers to understand people’s behaviour, to be able to encourage them into action.

NUS Medicine, together with Duke-NUS Medical School and NUS’s behavioural science research, need to work together to devise effective policies on health promotion and disease prevention to achieve Singapore’s push for Smart Nation – an initiative that aims to better the lives of Singaporeans through harnessing digital technologies.
