New Head of Department of Neonatology, NUH

Associate Professor Zubair Amin will be appointed as Head, Department of Neonatology, National University Hospital (NUH) with effect from 1 April 2016.
Associate Professor Zubair Amin is currently Senior Consultant, Department of Neonatology, National University Hospital (NUH). His past appointments include Assistant Dean (Curriculum and Assessment) and Deputy Head (Clinical) at the Medical Education Unit, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS Medicine), National University of Singapore.
Associate Professor Zubair Amin completed his residency and fellowship in paediatrics from University of Illinois, Chicago, USA and also obtained his Master of Health Profession Education (MHPE) from the same university. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, USA.
As a pioneer member of the Evidence Based Medicine Committee of NUH, Associate Professor Zubair Amin played a critical role in promoting evidence-based medicine locally and regionally. He provided expert consultation to the Singapore Medical Council for review of the Specialist Accreditation in Neonatology and served as an examiner for Diploma in Neonatology under the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He revamped and successfully implemented the undergraduate Neonatology education in all three teaching hospitals: NUH, KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital (KKWCH), and Singapore General Hospital (SGH).
Associate Professor Zubair Amin has led a wide range of faculty development programs at National University Health System (NUHS) in many critical areas of pedagogy and assessment. He has published widely on medical education making him one of the most prolific authors in the field of medical education in Asia. His contributions have enhanced the NUHS’s reputation internationally and he was chosen as one of the three global reviewers for the prestigious Karolinska Instituet’s Prize for Research in Medical Education (KIPRME), and appointed Theme Group Leader by the Ottawa Conference to develop consensus statement on use of technology in assessment.
Further to his accomplishments in research and education, Associate Professor Zubair Amin continued to excel in his clinical care which had broadened the management of complex patients and many referral cases from within and outside of Singapore.
Associate Professor Zubair Amin’s several awards include the University Teaching Excellence Award (2006), Friends of the Medical Students, Medical Society, NUS (2008), International Educational Partnership in Pediatrics (IEPP) awarded by the Department of Pediatrics and Department of Medical Education, The University of Illinois at Chicago, USA.
He succeeds Dr Lee Jiun, whose leadership and achievements had transformed the department into one of the best Neonatology departments in Singapore and the region, with one of the lowest infection rates among very low birth weight babies and very low complication rates of some of the major morbidities compared to other advanced institutes worldwide.
