New Head of Department of Biochemistry, NUS Medicine

The School is pleased to announce the appointment of Associate Professor Markus R. Wenk as Head, Department of Biochemistry, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS Medicine) with effect from 1 April 2016.

Associate Professor Wenk completed his PhD in Biophysics in 1997 from the Biozentrum University of Basel. He did his postdoctoral research fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine and continued as an Associate Research Scientist before he joined the Department of Biochemistry, NUS as an Assistant Professor in 2004. Promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure in 2007, A/Prof Wenk has been with the department for over 12 years and is well respected by colleagues here and internationally in the field of lipidomics. He has helped to put NUS on the international scene and for that, was awarded the NRF Investigatorship in 2015. This award is designed to support excellent researchers who are leaders in their respective fields of research. A/Prof Wenk has also won numerous research awards, including the NUS Young Investigator Award (2005), NUS Young Researcher Award (2009) and four Faculty Outstanding Researcher Awards (2007, 2009, 2010 & 2015).

NUS Medicine also places on record our grateful thanks and appreciation to Associate Professor Maxey Chung for his leadership as Acting Head, Department of Biochemistry from 1 July 2015 to 31 March 2016. His commitment to excellence in education and research has benefitted the Department, which continues to be very competitive in securing external grants as well as in publishing in high impact journals.
