High blood pressure is a condition in which the blood flows through the arteries at high pressure. It is more prevalent in middle-aged adults but there has been an increase in the number of children falling prey to this condition.

Dr Andrew Sng, NUS Medicine’s alumnus and Associate Consultant at NUH’s Division of Paediatric Endocrinology shared that his team attends to a new paediatric patient with high blood pressure every month, up from one every two months five years ago.

As this condition often has no warning signs, many of his young patients are often unaware that they have it. High blood pressure can continue into adulthood and result in other health issues.

Parents play a crucial role in helping their children adopt a healthy lifestyle. Dr Yvonne Lim, who also graduated from NUS Medicine and is a consultant at NUH’s Division of Paediatric Endocrinology said, “Parents sometimes fail to acknowledge that they play a big part in support and management. The home environment and the family as role models are important as well.”
