Medical graduate receives all-rounder award

Ms Chiong Yee Keow, a recent graduate of the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, has won the Lee Hsien Loong Award for Outstanding All-Round Achievement in recognition of her contributions to the community and spirit of innovation and enterprise.
She was the only university student to receive the award, which is part of the 2012 Special Awards granted annually to post-secondary students who have illustrious achievements in both the academic and non-academic arenas. This year, a total of 116 awardees received awards in nine categories.
While she was an undergraduate at NUS, Yee Keow’s passion for community service led her to be actively involved in a series of health-related projects. She was the organising chairperson of the Neighbourhood Health Screening project at Taman Jurong in 2009, helming the upgrading of the health screening programme by introducing evidence-based screening procedures such as fasting blood glucose and cholesterol.
In the same year, in her capacity as Sponsorship Director of the Public Health Screening, she raised S$16,000. The screening is a yearly event to increase public awareness of healthy living and the importance of primary prevention.
Yee Keow also went beyond Singapore in her volunteerism work. She participated in Project Sabai, a humanitarian and medical mission trip to Cambodia where she helped conduct health screening and health education lessons for village children, as well as provided sports education to reduce injuries during physical activities.
Congratulating the award recipients, Mr Lawrence Wong, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, said they have shown “positive character development and commitment to serve the community, and values such as industry, discipline, rigour, resilience and commitment to society. Such values are essential to the building of character and of our nation, and to Singapore’s next phase of development.”
