I Wish to Run 2014
Published: 05 May 2014
In 2012, two Phase II medical students, Tan Jun Han and Thiaghu Chandra, combined their desires to help the less fortunate and their love for running to raise funds for terminally ill children. Driven by compassion and determination, the duo started a charity run ‘I Wish to Run’ and together ran 123km and raised $26,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Their compassion has spurred others to do the same and since then, students from the medical school have been organising an annual static challenge to continue their efforts to raise funds for children with life threatening illnesses or conditions.
This year’s I Wish To Run static challenge saw 18 teams running on treadmills and cycling their hearts out on stationery bicycles. Their end goal was to raise funds for the NUHkids Fund.
The race was flagged off by Member of Parliament (MP) Ms Denise Phua and this year, the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine’s very own Vice-Dean of Education, Professor Hooi Shing Chuan led by example by sweating it out that morning with his buddies from Team Curro.
Prizes were awarded to the top three teams of each category (Closed and Open), with the winning teams of the Closed category (The Beauties & The Beasts) and Open category (The Beatles) clocking impressive distances in half an hour.
A total of $15,255 was raised from the challenge for the beneficiary, NUHkids Fund. A portion of the fund raised will also be used to grant the wishes of five needy paediatric patients from the National University Hospital (NUH). The committee would like to express their heartfelt thanks to its corporate sponsors, individual donors and participants, without them, the organising committee would not have been able to raise the funds and make the event a successful one.
