Dr Ng Su Wei Bryan appointed Head, Department of Anaesthesia

Dr Ng Su Wei Bryan has been appointed as Head, Department of Anaesthesia, at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and National University Hospital (NUH) with effect from 1 April 2021.
Dr Ng is currently a Senior Consultant with the Department of Anaesthesia, NUH and Assistant Professor at NUS Medicine. He has served as the Director of Clinical Services, NUH Anaesthesia, since 2018. As the lead obstetric anaesthetist, he introduced patient controlled epidural analgesia in 2010 and was actively involved in obstetric risk management and multi-disciplinary training. He also oversees the Anaesthetic Outpatient Consultation Clinic (AOCC) as the Perioperative Medicine lead since 2009, growing the AOCC into an integrated clinic encompassing pre-operative optimisation, pain management and acupuncture services. Dr Ng also contributed to COVID-19 dormitory operations as the clinical co-lead for Acacia Lodge, SCM (Tuas) and CDPL (Tuas). Within NUH, he coordinated workflows for the safe surgical management of confirmed and suspect COVID-19 patients within the operating theatres.
Dr Ng will take over the reins as Academic Head of the Department from Associate Professor Ti Lian Kah.
The School expresses its deepest appreciation to Assoc Prof Ti Lian Kah for his leadership and dedicated contributions as Head of the Department of Anaesthesia at NUS Medicine since 2015. Assoc Prof Ti has brought together educators across the three health clusters to achieve consistently good feedback and teaching scores, and introduced new modules utilising simulation. He also built up the research infrastructure of the Department, making it easier for staff to publish their research work. This led to a steady increase in the department’s publication output, with 2020 seeing the most number of papers ever published. Adapting to challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Assoc Prof Ti led the department to ensure that medical students learnt anaesthesia remotely through a new online curriculum. Assoc Prof Ti was also the lead author in a publication that has been cited almost 200 times on the best practices for protection of staff and improvement of safety in the operating room during care of COVID-19 patients.
