Associate Professor Manoor Prakash Hande appointed Assistant Dean-Designate (Safety/Research Facilities Management)

Associate Professor Manoor Prakash Hande has been appointed as Assistant Dean-Designate for Safety and Research Facilities Management at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

Dr. M. Prakash Hande is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology at NUS Medicine and a Fellow at Tembusu College, NUS. He received his PhD in Radiation Biology from Mangalore University, India (1991) and a Master of Public Health (MPH) with Occupational and Environmental Health specialisation from NUS (2010).

Prior to joining NUS as a faculty member in 2002, Assoc Prof Hande has worked at the following institutions: Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, India; Osaka University Medical School, Japan; Sylvius Laboratories, Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands; Terry Fox Laboratory (British Columbia Cancer Research Centre), Vancouver, Canada and Center for Radiological Research, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York, USA.  He is one of the pioneers who identified the role of DNA repair factors in telomere regulation in mammalian systems. 

His laboratory in NUS Medicine also developed bioindicators for radiation exposure which are crucial in determining the doses of radiation after accidental exposures. He has published 160 research articles (Radiation Biology, Telomeres-Telomerase, DNA damage/repair, nano-geno-toxicology) till date with >11,500 citations in international journals including Nature Genetics, American Journal of Human Genetics, Genes and Development, CELL and SCIENCE. Assoc Prof Hande teaches cancer biology and ageing in life sciences curriculum (Physiology) and Biomedicine and Singapore Society (2012 to 2017) and Radiation and Society (2015 onwards) under science-technology-society (Tembusu College). He was a consultant to the Division of Human Health, International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, Austria in 2015 to 2016 during his sabbatical leave from NUS. He is an expert member of the “Biological mechanisms influencing health effects from low-dose radiation exposure” workgroup with United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR). Assoc Prof Hande has been with various committees within NUS Medicine. He has been representing the Department of Physiology on the NUSMed Safety Committee for almost 14 years and has been Chair of the Centre for Translational Medicine (CeTM) Safety Committee since 2011.

In his role as Assistant Dean-Designate (Safety/Research Facilities Management), Assoc Prof Hande will work closely with the Assistant Dean (Safety and Space Management) Assoc Prof Sim Tiow Suan in ensuring the safety of all research conducted in the School of Medicine. He will eventually take over as Assistant Dean (Safety/Research Facilities Management) in July 2021. We would like to express our deepest appreciation to Assoc Prof Sim who has done an outstanding job in setting up the School’s safety framework and ensuring an excellent track record for safety.
