AAHCI’s Southeast Asia Regional Meeting 2016

The 14th of January marked the Association of Academic Health Centers (AAHC) International’s Southeast Asia Regional Meeting at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS Medicine). More than 60 participants from 14 countries attended the meeting.
Chaired by the Southeast Asia Regional Office Ambassadors, Professor John Eu-Li Wong, Chief Executive of the National University Health System and Associate Professor Yeoh Khay Guan, Dean of NUS Medicine, the meeting adopted the theme, “Integrating Medical Education and Research with Clinical Care in an emerging Academic Health System”. Dr Steven Wartman, President and CEO of AAHC, kicked things off with an engaging opening session on the ‘New-Physics’ of patient care. The session was followed by a full day of lively and thought-provoking lectures and discussions, in which local and international experts from academia and healthcare exchanged experiences and views.
The speakers of the day included Dr Martin Paul, President of Maastricht University and Chair of the AAHCI Steering Committee; Assoc Prof Chong Yap Seng, Vice-Dean, Academic Medicine at the Yong Loo Lin School of Singapore; Prof Chia Kee Seng, Dean of the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health; Dr Nicholas Fisk, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Queensland; Dr Kovit Pattanapanyasat, Professor of the Center of Excellence for Flow Department of Research and Development, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital at Mahidol University; and Dr Jamal I-Ching Sam from the Department of Medical Microbiology at the University of Malaya Medical Centre.
The panel discussion, moderated by Duke-NUS Medical School’s Dean, Dr Thomas Coffman featured Dr Sunil Chandy, Director of the Christian Medical College, Vellore, Dr Ducksun Ahn, President of the Korean Institute of Medical Education and Evaluation and Dr Teguh Aryandono, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Universitas Gadjah Mada. It generated much active and stimulating discussion and dialogue among participants.
The AAHCI hopes to build on the outcome of this Southeast Asia Regional Meeting to develop future meetings which will focus on issues faced by Academic Health Systems and Centres in all Southeast Asian nations.
