Published: 26 Sep 2014
On 16 August, 400 medical and nursing students from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School gathered together for the annual Student Medical-Nursing Education Conference (SMEC) at the Lim Seng Tjoe Lecture Theatre (LT27), National University of Singapore.
The conference’s theme ‘From Patients to Professionals: 10 Years Forward’ emphasized the importance of patient-centered care and its role in holistic, quality healthcare with the hope that students will be able to appreciate the change in their roles and perspectives as they progress to become healthcare professionals. With the congregation of medical and nursing students from the various institutions, SMEC also serves as a platform to promote inter-professional collaboration and education.
Professor Low Cheng Hock kick-start the conference with an inspirational address by sharing his experiences and personal stories that plucked the heart strings of both students and professionals alike. Following the talk, students broke into smaller groups for the workshops which provided them an opportunity to learn and understand issues from the patients, nurses and doctors’ perspectives. Senior students were concurrently involved in a Scientific Research Poster Competition where they displayed their research works and underwent rigorous appraisal by distinguished judges.
The conference ended with a prize presentation for the winners of the Scientific Research Poster Competition and musical performance during the closing ceremony.
