Welcome to the Department of Surgery.

The Department is a family of 14 specialties: Breast Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Trauma Surgery, Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Urology, Paediatric Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Multi Organ Transplant Surgery.

We provide clinical care to current patients in need of excellent, peer reviewed ethical management, and we lead in providing for future patients by contributing to teaching undergraduate medical students healthcare professionals. We train specialists in surgical subspecialties and we initiate research into better medical care. Over the years, we had established several research infrastructure to train, to teach and to develop state of the art care:

 

Advanced Surgery Training Centre: Its 1000 sqm area is equipped with cutting edge facilities and devices to create and organize outstanding educational programme for junior and advanced surgical trainees. From 3-D virtual reality to sophisticated surgical simulators from e-learning to HDTV endolaparoscopic sets, from neurosurgical operative microscope to microsurgical skill lab and more state-of-the-art technology will be combined. All these high tech “gadgets” together with the systematic educational programs will allow the centre to better define the standards of surgical training and the needs of our continuous evolving medical professionals and ultimate for the benefit of our patients.

Basic science laboratories: Basic science is an integral part of surgical excellence. Our laboratories focus on clinically relevant basic science, such as bladder and stomach cancer immunology, breast cancer epidemiology and genetics and potential surgical cures for diabetes.

Comprehensive databases: Good databases, with easy query on research questions, supported by easy to use statistical analyses are essential to surgical research and other clinical aspects of our work. Our strong team focusing on clinical databases, including databases annotating our tissue repository make this combination a powerful research infrastructure.
