NUS study shows more than a third of Bukit Panjang older adults on verge of becoming frail

A recent study of 1051 older adults in Bukit Panjang by Associate Professor Reshma Merchant, Division Head of Geriatric Medicine at the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, revealed that 37 per cent of the cohort were on the edge of becoming frail. Of this group, 6 per cent were found to be frail, while another 8 per cent suffered from cognitive impairment.

NUS Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine Institute for Aging Research announce research collaboration

The Centre for Healthy Ageing at the National University Health System (NUHS) is committed to finding strategies to keep the Singapore population healthy, longer. The Institute for Aging Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Einstein) in New York has a similar goal and is launching a clinical trial to test a drug they hope will keep people healthy and delay or prevent multiple chronic diseases simultaneously. After discussion, the two Institutes have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, designed to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration as they seek to combat the ravages of ageing.

NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine's Centre for Biomedical Ethics (CBmE) will launch a Singapore Bioethics Casebook titled ‘Caring for Older People in an Ageing Society’ on 24 May 2017. The Casebook features 10 case studies with situations that go beyond the clinic and into the community, and beyond mainstream issues in medical ethics to focus on the everyday ethical challenges faced by family caregivers, domestic workers, case managers, volunteers, and the aged themselves.
