Programme Highlights

This course provides participants with a practical, science-based understanding of sleep and its importance for physical health, emotional wellbeing, learning, and daily performance. It is designed for anyone interested in understanding how sleep works, why it is commonly disrupted, and how healthier sleep habits can be developed.

Participants will explore the basic physiology of sleep, including sleep regulation, circadian rhythms, and the main stages of sleep. The course will also introduce how sleep is measured using polysomnography, sleep diaries, and consumer wearables, with a discussion of the strengths and limitations of each method.

The course then examines the relationship between sleep, body, and mind. Key topics include the effects of sleep on hormones, metabolism, immunity, stress, mood, and emotional regulation. Common sleep problems will also be discussed, including insomnia, obstructive sleep apnoea, circadian rhythm disturbances, and other sleep disorders.

The course will be conducted in an interactive workshop format, using short lectures, case examples, group discussions, self-reflection, and practical exercises. Participants will learn about common sleep myths and misconceptions, they will also explore evidence-informed strategies to improve sleep, including sleep hygiene, light exposure, caffeine use, bedtime routines, relaxation techniques, and mindfulness-based approaches. By the end of the course, participants will be able to explain why sleep matters, recognise common factors that disrupt sleep, and apply practical strategies to support better sleep in daily life.

3. Discuss how sleep affects physical health, emotional wellbeing, learning, and performance
4. Recognise common sleep problems and identify when professional help may be needed
5. Apply evidence-informed sleep hygiene, relaxation, and mindfulness strategies to support healthier sleep habits
