The 28th East Asian Medical Students’ Conference 2015

The East Asian Medical Students’ Conference (EAMSC) is an annual event which gathers medical students from the East Asian region to discuss their ideas on a nominated global healthcare issue and propose possible solutions to overcome the problem.
This year, the 28th Conference was hosted by Asian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA) Indonesia, at Tangerang, West Jakarta, Indonesia, from 10 to 15 January with the main theme of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) – “Halt the Disease, Help the People”. It focused on measures to solve the rising problem of STIs to reduce or even eradicate the prevalence of such diseases, as well as remove the discrimination and psychological burden of afflicted patients.
The academic activities and workshops, including keynote lectures by international speakers from the World Health Organization (WHO) provided delegates an overview of the epidemiology and global issues of STIs and ways to approach the growing problem. Delegates also had the opportunity for hands-on experience on circumcision and the examination of vaginal discharge in both macroscopic and microscopic views. A cultural booth and cultural night also allowed the diverse group of delegates to make new connections with people from different cultural backgrounds through activities such as “Night in the Museum” tour in Kota Tua and a trip to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, also known as “Beautiful Indonesia Miniature Park”. Overall, the EAMSC was an eye-opening experience for the delegates, who not only learnt useful medical knowledge and skills, but also forged priceless friendships with other medical students from around the region.
