The National Healthcare-Medical Symposium

The second National Healthcare-Medical Symposium came to a successful close on 4 June 2014. This year’s symposium saw 96 like-minded pre-university students nationwide, who were interested in pursuing their passion in the healthcare sector. The symposium aimed to expose the participants to a more accurate representation of the healthcare sector and help them ascertain their decision in becoming a medical professional.
Over the two days, the participants gained insights from distinguished speakers from the Inspirational Lecture Series, where speakers delved into the nature of their work, shared their reflections on being in the profession and even investigated real-life case studies to prove how dynamic medicine can be beyond the textbooks. In addition, the participants were engaged through dialogue sessions with specialists from various healthcare fields and a panel discussion with medical students on what it is like to study medicine. Last but not least, the participants were given a tour at the NUS Anatomy Museum and Centre for Healthcare Simulation.
The theme for this year’s symposium is {COM}PASSION and seeks to uncover the true meaning of compassion in the medical field. Each speaker had their own interpretation of compassion. Some defined it as ‘giving more than what you receive’, while others termed it as ‘having a heart’ and ‘being a listening ear’.
On a whole, the participants agreed that the experience was meaningful and enriching. “I have learnt a lot over the past two days. I am definitely going to recommend my juniors to sign up next year!” one participant said. Many participants were inspired and the symposium reaffirmed many to pursue their passion in the healthcare sector.
