Hougang residents learnt more about first aid

On the afternoon of 2nd March 2014, our group of Phase IV medical students organised the inaugural first aid roadshow for the residents of Hougang. This was in conjunction with their Community Health Project titled “Knowledge and Attitudes of First Aid”, where they shared their research findings and basic first aid principles with the public.
A few days prior the actual event, our students went door-to-door to distribute flyers in an attempt to spread awareness about the event. The venue was decorated with banners and balloons, with a total of seven booths. Five booths comprised of posters with information about their research findings and basic first aid management for choking, burns and bleeding. The remaining two booths were more interactive as residents were quizzed on their first aid knowledge and rewarded with snacks and first aid kits!
Residents from the different blocks flocked down to participate in the activities planned for them. Children were kept entertained with fun games and balloon sculpturing as parents learnt about the importance of first aid and some basic first aid skills.
In addition to sharing what they have learnt in school with the residents, our students also gained much valuable experience. Despite the short time frame to put up a roadshow, it was all worth it as residents left the event smiling and well-equipped with useful information on first aid.
