Programme Highlights

The HLE5101 module will explore the core legal principles and precedents in healthcare practice. The topics that will be covered include medical negligence, medical errors, patient confidentiality and disclosure, vulnerable adults and children at risk, innovative treatments and telemedicine. Related ethical issues that arise when reviewing cases will also be discussed. 

Learners should be able to be able to:

  • Identify ethical issues and ethical values pertaining to medical decision-making
  • Understand the core legal principles pertaining to medical decision-making
  • Apply ethical analytical skills and weigh up competing values to support recommendations when reviewing a case
  • Engage in critical reflection on issues pertaining to medical decision-making

HLE5101 is one of two modules that form the Executive Certificate in Healthcare Law and Ethics.

Learners are required to sign up for both individual modules (HLE5101 and HLE5102) during the application period, which is from 06 May – 05 June 2024.

The module will be delivered through synchronous online sessions and asynchronous e-learning.

  • Classes are conducted Thursdays, 6.30pm – 8pm
  • Additional hours for weekly online learning videos is required

  • *Practicums are conducted in groups depending on size of the final class – online over Zoom. A short discussion/presentation about a case will be given to the participants. Duration is approx 10-15 mins but could be longer depending on group size. A more elaborate assessment plan with details and requirements for the practicum will likely be shared with the participants at the beginning of the course.

  • Assessment includes assignments, simulation of the experience of a Clinical Ethics Committee and participation in seminars. 

Pre-Requisites

  • Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree and may be required to show relevant work experience.
  • Applicants with other qualifications and experience may be considered on a case by case basis, subject to approval by the Centre for Biomedical Ethics.

 

Awards and Certification

Learners who complete both HLE5101 and HLE5102 modules will obtain an Executive Certificate in Healthcare Law and Ethics.

CPE Points

CPE points for doctors, nurses and pharmacists are applied and subjected to approval.

1) All self-sponsored Singaporeans aged 25 and above can use their SkillsFuture Credit to pay for the course fee.

2) Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy (MCES): Singaporeans aged 40 and above may enjoy subsidies up to 90% of the course fee.

3) Enhanced Training Support for SMEs (ETSS): SME-sponsored employees (Singapore Citizens and PRs) may enjoy subsidies up to 90% of the course fee.

4) Learners must pass all assessment components to successfully complete the course.

Interested learners must self-enrol for both modules under the Executive Certificate in Healthcare Law and Ethics individually via the Online Application Portal (OAP).

Points to note

  • Module submission closes on 05 June 2024 (Wednesday) 23:59HR (strictly no extension will be given). No payment is collected now, as the modules are ongoing registration.
  • As part of the submission requirement for academic modules, please prepare to upload your NRIC (front and back) / transcript / Certification during the application.
  • All applicants will be notified of the application outcome (offered/rejected) ~ 4 weeks after registration closing. You will need to accept/reject the module offering by then & the school’s administrative & finance team will contact all applicants to proceed with administration & corp billing/payment/ Skillsfuture application in stages.
  • Modules are not offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. A committee will review all applications base on the eligibility criteria.
  • Student Services Fee of $25.46 is payable for the semester after enrolling in the modular course.
