Winning the fight against antimicrobial resistance

Singapore launched its National Strategic Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) on 1 November 2017. The plan is aligned with the World Health Organisation’s Global Action Plan on AMR and aims to limit the spread of antimicrobial-resistant microbes and the hard to treat drug-resistant infections that they can cause through five core strategies. They are education, surveillance, research, prevention of infection, and optimisation of antibiotic use.
In line with the plan to combat AMR, Associate Professor Hsu Li Yang and Professor Paul Ananth Tambyah take a deeper look at the challenges posed by AMR, the misconceptions and influences that can undermine the efforts to control the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in a commentary piece.
Associate Professor Hsu Li Yang leads the Antimicrobial Resistance Programme at the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health and is a member of the workgroup that developed the National Strategic Action Plan. Professor Paul Ananth Tambyah is an infectious diseases physician and Professor at the NUS Medicine’s Department of Medicine.
