Dr Rufaihah Binte Abdul Jalil was awarded the Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Welfare Foundation (MSIWF) grant for research on atherosclerosis, a common disease known to harden the arteries among the elderly.
Atherosclerosis is one of the most common causes of heart attacks, and it affects 2 in 3 men, and 1 in 2 women after the age of 40. Dr Rufaihah hopes to test the potential application of LyP-1 peptide aptamer, a type of protein molecule, in detecting atherosclerotic plaques, and to develop reagents that can specifically benefit the detect and treatment of atherosclerosis.
“This project has great social significance in which upon successful, it would enhance detection of atherosclerotic plaques in patients and early intervention can be implemented to improve the health status of the patients,” said Dr Rufaihah.
MSIWF awarded research grants to four winners this year and supports interdisciplinary research in Japan, Singapore and Thailand in two key areas: senior citizen welfare and traffic safety.
