New Head of Department of Laboratory Medicine, NUH

Dr Roland Jureen will be appointed as Head, Department of Laboratory Medicine, National University Hospital (NUH) with effect from 1 April 2016.
Dr Jureen is currently Deputy Head and Senior Consultant, Department of Laboratory Medicine, NUH. He obtained his Medical Degree (MD) at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden and further obtained his Doctorate from the Institute of Medicine at University of Bergen, Norway with a thesis on drug resistant enterococci.
Dr Jureen’s main area of interest is Clinical Microbiology. He has provided expert opinion and laboratory services in this field and has been involved in introducing novel laboratory technologies. He has also collaborated with the Infection Control Team and the Department of Medicine.
Dr Jureen also holds various appointments with the Ministry of Health, Singapore including Vice-Chairperson of the National Antimicrobial Resistance Expert Panel, member of the National Antimcrobial Resistance Control Committee and member of the Expert Panel for the National Public Health Laboratory.
He succeeds Associate Professor Sunil Sethi, who has served as Head, Department of Laboratory Medicine since 1 July 2002. Associate Professor Sethi’s leadership and achievements has transformed the department into a leading diagnostic laboratory that offers a comprehensive range of laboratory tests to meet the needs of patients, doctors and other healthcare providers. Associate Professor Sethi was instrumental in transforming the Core Laboratory into the current fully automated facility at NUH. He also put in place a strong quality management programme, ensuring that the department meets the highest standards for laboratory medicine.
