Biography
Dr. Shefaly Shorey, an Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS), has established herself as a prominent researcher in the fields of maternal, paternal, and newborn health across the perinatal period. Her research program, encapsulated by the acronym “PURE,” focuses on Parenting outcomes, Understanding and rendering care, and Engaging fathers in family care. She has contributed significantly to understanding and improving healthcare outcomes for parents and their newborns through psychosocial and educational interventions.
Her work has gained international recognition, reflected in her inclusion in Stanford University’s list of the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists in 2022 and 2023. Beyond her research outputs and innovative health solutions, Shefaly has substantially impacted policy, practice, and society. She serves as an invited parenting expert for the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) and a contributor to the latest screentime guidelines for children by the Ministry of Health (MoH). Her work has advanced academic knowledge and led to tangible improvements in clinical practice, particularly antenatal programs supporting at-risk mothers and enhancing the mental health of couples, especially fathers (a group often overlooked in Singapore’s maternity care landscape).
Dr Shorey has published more than 200 articles in high-impact factor peer-reviewed journals and her research has gained international recognition, as evidenced by her inclusion in Stanford University’s list of the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists in 2022 and 2023 consecutively. Dr. Shorey’s contributions extend beyond research, with a significant impact on policy and practice, notably through her role as an invited parenting expert for the Ministry of Social and Family Health in Singapore. Her leadership positions, including President of Women in Science and Healthcare (WISH) and Chair of the Southeast and East Asia Nursing Education and Research Network (SEANERN), further underscore her influence in the global healthcare community.
Dr. Shorey’s work has not only advanced academic knowledge but has also led to tangible improvements in clinical practice, particularly in supporting at-risk mothers and enhancing the mental health of couples undergoing IVF treatment. Her achievements have been recognised with prestigious awards, including the President’s Award for Nurses (the highest accolade in Singapore’s Nursing profession), the National Medical Research Council Talent Award (being the only nurse academic in Singapore to hold this award to date), and a Fellowship with the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). Being a trailblazer nurse academic, she has achieved many firsts such as Fulbright Scholar, President Nurse, and Clinician Scientist, and is considered a role model by budding nurse researchers.
Overall, Dr. Shorey’s research has made a substantial impact on maternal and child health, both in Singapore and internationally, driving forward the integration of evidence-based practices into clinical care and shaping future healthcare policies and interventions.
