1. Join our ever-growing NUS Medicine fraternity

What can we say but, Welcome to the Club! Established in 1905, we’ve had graduates since 1910, that’s over 100 years of providing Singaporeans with doctors throughout the healthcare system.

Not only are you in good company, you’re also well-supported with the wide network of seniors, alumni, faculty and of course, your peers. Starting from Year 1, you’ll be sorted into one of 10 houses where you have your own House Room to gather with House seniors and friends! With the Seniors-Teach-Juniors sessions, you’ll always be looked out for and have your questions answered outside of lessons. You’ll also have a Clinical Group of like-minded peers where you can learn and discuss topics together, making it that much easier to navigate the rigours of Medicine School and ensuring that you won’t be alone in this journey 🙂

2. You’re at the heart of our pedagogy

The human body is so complex but you don’t have to learn it all by yourself! The NUS Medicine pedagogy puts our students at the heart of our lessons, by incorporating lots of prototypical clinical cases to discuss through our Collaborative Learning Cases, where your basics are reinforced and clinical reasoning is enhance. This is in addition to the lectures and tutorials taught by specialists in their own fields, bringing their encounters straight from the ward to your class, preparing you well for the situations that you will eventually face as a doctor.

What’s more, NUS Medicine is well-supported by all the departments in NUH and the faculty have dedicated resources for each of their specialisations just for you! Check out some that are made available publicly here →. We really applaud all the effort put in to sharing the knowledge and making it easier to absorb. There’s even a full video guide on how to do well in the exams by the Pathology department 😉

And that’s not all. The Centre for Healthcare Simulation enables our students to have high fidelity simulation training sessions that replicate real situations! The centre is the biggest and most comprehensive of its kind in Asia, students work in teams to handle intense medical situations and emergencies in various settings like the Operating Theatre or Emergency Room. 3. Learning resources at your fingertips (literally!)

Yes, at your fingertips, with a touch on the iPad provided to all NUS Medicine students! Browse through catalogues of resources, 3D body models, load videos, draw, sketch and annotate, allowing you to capture your lessons clearly. You’ll also get to use Virtual Reality programmes that provide a safe space for gaining both technical and soft skills, just like in the videos here →. You can also use Hololens, which merges three-dimensional holographic technology with reality, to let you practise procedures with guidance as shown in this video by Microsoft. The technology is so real and immersive that you just have to experience to know!

You’ll also gain access to our exclusive Anatomy Museum and Pathology Museum where you’ll be able to study preserved specimens in close detail. One special elective of NUS Medicine is our Silent Mentor programme, a very special course only made possible by the generosity of donors who have pledged their bodies to education and research. Have a glimpse via the videos by CNA insider and The Straits Times.

Let’s also acknowledge the oldest library in NUS, the Medicine Library that is stocked full of medical journals collected since 1905 👍 Take a virtual tour of the library here →

4. The human factor in every breath

Like our Silent Mentors who have trusted us with their bodies, our patients too trust us with their care. Our dedicated team of SPs (standardised patients) enable students to gain experience in dealing with the different patient-centric situations that arise in the profession, expressing a wide range of illnesses and symptoms for our students to practise and hone their skills.

Additionally, our students are also immersed in the real clinical environment right from Year 1 where they acquire clinical skills, and nurture their soft skills and values. The combination of simulated training with actual patient environment exposes our students to multiple facets of healthcare and provides a holistic curriculum with great emphasis on treating the patient, not just the disease.

Our students also get 16 weeks of electives over 2 years where they can choose to go for local or overseas attachments and community projects. Students can also initiate and helm their own projects. Take a look at the wide range of projects, overseen by the NUS Medical Society here → or take a look at some of their videos below!
