Fine needle aspiration cytology of liver mass lesions can be a very challenging diagnostic area, especially in regions where chronic liver disease and, thus, hepatocellular nodular lesions of diverse nature abound. My interest in this area has culminated in a book addressing the cytohistological algorithmic approach to the diagnosis of small tissue samples from focal liver lesions.
In chronic liver disease, assessment of hepatic fibrosis is important for the evaluation of efficacy of antiviral and antifibrotic therapies. Accurate computerized morphometric analysis and staging of hepatic fibrosis with aim to give a better reflection of the hemodynamic and functional status of the diseased liver are areas I am working on with my collaborators.
