Undergraduate Teaching

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is responsible for teaching medical students from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The aim of the orthopaedic clinical posting is to nuture caring and knowledgeable doctors and equip them with good skills to enable them to practice competently, professionally, and with compassion.

The Department organises and conducts the main systemic clinical posting in Orthopaedic Surgery for Phase III (Year 3) and Phase V (Final Year) medical students. The students attend lectures, bedside tutorials, ambulatory clinic teaching, etc. The Department also coordinates the teaching and supervision of these students at all the major restructured hospitals in Singapore.

 

Syllabus & Programmes

Various topics are covered for the Undergraduates:

 

Orthopaedic Surgery Systematic Course

This course covers a total period of eight weeks in the third year and two weeks revision in the fifth and final year. Centralised teaching is being conducted once a week on Fridays at NUH. Students who are posted to the other hospitals return to NUH for a common teaching programme. The teaching activities comprise:

  1. Systematic lectures in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology

  2. Clinical examination of regions

  3. Objective Structured Slide Examination (OSSE) Teaching Session
