Advocating for first aid
Project First Aid (PFA), which started in 2021, aims to empower nursing students to be advocates and educate others on general first aid. As student nurses, we are trained in clinical skills to respond to medical emergencies in hospitals. It is also important to be equipped with first aid skills to confidently respond to emergencies outside of clinical settings.
In 2024, nursing students had the opportunity to learn various first aid skills through our project’s collaborations with groups such as the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and NUS Red Cross. Equipped with this knowledge, students from NUS Nursing shared their expertise by teaching these skills to others. Some of the skills acquired include managing heat injuries and burns, simple bandaging techniques, and more.
With their newly acquired skills, Nursing students actively shared their knowledge and experiences during the annual first aid carnival, which was held at NUS UTown for two days. Beyond NUS, project members further contributed to the local community, where nursing students had the opportunity to teach migrant workers safety and first aid skills, such as burn management and wound management.
We also recently launched our first psychological first aid workshop, in which we were pleased to collaborate with the Safe U organization to educate our students on the principles of psychological first aid and apply them in different case scenarios.

Our time with Project First Aid (PFA) has been an invaluable milestone in our nursing journey. Being part of PFA not only equipped us with essential first aid skills, but also offered countless opportunities to serve a wide range of communities. Through meaningful collaborations with organizations such as SCDF, Red Cross, Children’s Cancer Foundation, and Fun Fit Fruits, we were able to extend our outreach beyond the NUS community. One particularly memorable experience was the Fun Fit Fruits event, where we had the privilege of teaching migrant workers vital first aid skills tailored to their occupational needs. These experiences gave us deeper insight into the unique needs of different groups in Singapore. Through our interactions and initiatives, we learned how to meet people where they are and to respond more effectively to the realities they face. We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our staff advisor, Dr. Chen Hui-Chen for her constant encouragement and unwavering support. With her guidance, our team was able to design sustainable, community-empowering programmes while also growing in our own development as nursing students. Being part of PFA has been more than just a chance to give back, it has been a pivotal and deeply enriching part of our journey in NUS Nursing.

It was such a delight working with PFA on our event, Fit. Fun. Fruits. (FFF) 2024. The PFA team played a significant role, educating migrant workers at Kranji Westlite Way dormitory on wound management. They also taught them how to differentiate between burns and wounds, when and how to seek medical attention as well as demonstrating safe techniques for lifting heavy objects. They ensured that the content was easy to understand and engaging for the migrant workers. The PFA team was of great support to us during the planning and execution of this event and made valuable contributions every step of the way! This collaboration has been very fruitful for us and we look forward to working with PFA in the future!

We were pleased to be invited by Project First Aid to do a pro bono Psychological First Aid (PFA) workshop for NUS students on 18th Jan 2025. Our volunteers thoroughly enjoyed the experience of teaching the participants in a small cosy setting. Despite the challenges, we were heartened by the effort put in by Project First Aid to make this event a success. We would like to express our thanks for their hospitality and small gifts! It was a pleasure to work with Project First Aid and we very much look forward to working with them again if there is an opportunity.
