Dr Siriwan is a Senior Lecturer at Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies (ALCNS), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS). She specialises in Critical Care and Infection Control, with more than a decade of nursing experiences in multi-disciplinary areas from the restructured and private hospitals. She is passionate in sharing her knowledge and clinical experiences, and have trained nurses in neuro intensive care unit and general wards, and led infection control projects and wound committee to improve the standard of nursing care in the acute hospitals.
Having gained first hand experiences in the clinical and specialties setting, she made her transition into the educational field. Her interest in nurturing the next generation of nurses has led her into an academic career spanning across the three higher institutions for nursing education in Singapore. As an educator, she had trained nurse educators and nurse leaders from Philippines under Temasek Foundation’s train-the-trainer programme. A firm believer in lifelong learning, Siriwan kept herself abreast clinically through her PhD research study on empowerment among rheumatoid arthritis patients. She combined her educational and research experiences to inspire and encourage her undergradute and honours nursing students to learn and translate theory into evidenced-based practices. She utilises a wide range of teaching pedagogies, tapping into both traditional and technology enhanced platforms to actively engage her students in their learning.
Siriwan recognises that besides supporting her students’ academic progress, there is the need to help them create a nurturing and supportive learning environment for one another. She conducted pilot study on peer mentoring in her nursing practice modules with her research team which revealed positive findings. As the Chair to the Houses under NUS Nursing, she is looking into setting up a peer mentoring programme that is more structured and sustainable for the nursing students. In the clinical front, Siriwan holds a joint appointment as Clinical Associate/Nurse Clinician with National University Hospital (NUH). She is working towards translating her PhD’s patient empowerment intervention into clinical practice with the Rheumatology Department.
Siriwan has received awards for teaching excellence and for productivity and innovation from the various educational institutions she has taught in.
She has also received teaching grant and seed funding to conduct research focusing on peer mentoring and patient empowerment studies. Her current research areas of interest include nursing education, patient education and empowerment of patients with chronic diseases.
