Hear from Our Students and Alumni

The Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies is one of the top universities in Asia for Nursing according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject

Learning never stops – both in the academic and real-world setting.

Thus, understanding the unique needs of the current medical professional, the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies’(NUS Nursing) Bachelor of Science (Nursing Practice) (Part-Time) programme is now made more accessible with a curriculum designed specifically for part-time students.

Working professionals of today now have the option to pursue their nursing degree, while still maintaining full-time employment. This is because at ALCNS, we have taken into consideration the time demands of our part-time students. As such, the classes for our BSc (Nursing Practice) degree are scheduled between 1800 to 2100 hrs on weekdays and 0800 to 1300 hrs on weekends, with each semester following the NUS academic calendar which consists of 13 instructional weeks.

We are committed to providing uncompromised learning experiences to students of every background. We have always believed that your responsibilities outside of school should not be an obstacle to receiving quality education.

Learners who emerge from this context certainly have a place with us at ALCN, such as Nur Adelia Binte Zulkifli, a staff nurse and part-time student. Talking about her experience in our hybrid programme, she says, “Pursuing a degree has been my goal since I graduated from the poly, but financial and time constraints hindered me. A three-year, part-time programme allows me to juggle work and school, and still have time for myself.” She is also thankful for the part-time programme’s subsidised school fees, a sentiment that many other part-time students share with her.

Our approach to self-paced learning has produced some of the most successful graduates in the field. In the case of Samuel Wong Wei Seng who needed to continue working in order to fund his education, our part-time programme allowed him to perform at his best in both settings. “Despite its rigour, the programme gives me flexibility to learn at my own time and pace,” he states. With our support, Samuel will be receiving the Lim Siew Foong Nursing Excellence Prize as a top student. It is but the beginning of his ultimate goal to be an Advanced Practice Nurse with an advanced diploma in mental health sponsored by IMH this October.

Different part-time students have benefitted from our part-time programme in many other ways. For T Kavitha Rose, a research coordinator, she appreciates the direct connection between what she learns in school and her current job responsibilities. “I am able to explore ethical and legal issues and frameworks related to healthcare in the local context,” she says, adding that her classroom experiences have improved her academic writing and presentation skills which are essential to her job.

Meanwhile, Lim Hui Yun talks about understanding the rationale behind critical work practices that have made her a more effective staff nurse. “The curriculum is designed such that we are able to apply the knowledge at our clinical practices,” she says. It’s a thought echoed by Noor Azman Bin Mohamed Amin who cares deeply about being able to serve his patients better as a staff nurse more competently. He shares that, “The programme builds on the foundation of my diploma studies by deepening my knowledge and honing my skills so that I can provide quality and professional patient care.”

And for even more of our students like Lim Phei Kuen, one of their most valuable learning experiences from our part-time programme comes in the form of discovering the varied career options that open up for them when they earn their degree at NUS. “The competencies gained from the course give us various career paths to choose from,” she says. “This programme equips us with the knowledge and skills for various nursing roles such as nurse manager, nurse clinician, nurse educator, and nurse researcher,” she continues.

Working students have much to gain from the programme – a competitive edge, a global mindset, and invaluable learning from esteemed lecturers. As Joanne Gan Oon Nee, a Staff Nurse from the Assisi Hospice, shares, “Lessons have been intellectually stimulating. The sharing from our lecturers and the regular group discussions among classmates from diverse Nursing specialisations have enhanced my learning experience and enriched my learning journey.”

These stories from our part-time students are testaments to the care and detail we put into designing our most flexible programme to date. Collectively, they speak of the quality of our part-time programme that supports your academic and professional aspirations equally as the most direct path towards your long-term success.

Elevate your learning and be equipped to meet the diverse health care needs of the community through this unique programme.
