Programme Director Message

Infection prevention and control (IPC) is the cornerstone of patient safety across diverse healthcare settings, including acute hospitals, long-term care facilities, ambulatory clinics, dialysis centers, and home healthcare services. IPC specialist plays a vital role in safeguarding vulnerable patient populations, such as the immunocompromised, the elderly, neonates, and individuals undergoing complex medical procedures.

In today’s healthcare landscape, the urgency to address emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), and pandemic preparedness has never been greater. From global outbreaks of novel pathogens to the silent epidemic of antimicrobial resistance and the rising costs associated with HAIs, the demand for skilled IPC specialists is at an all-time high. Effective IPC measures are crucial to mitigating these challenges, ensuring patient safety, optimizing care outcomes, and maintaining the trust and well-being of the communities we serve.

It is my pleasure to introduce our Master of Science in Infection Prevention and Control, a program designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed clinical decisions, implement innovative IPC strategies, conduct effective training for healthcare personnel, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and lead IPC initiatives and projects. Our curriculum is tailored to empower you to enhance patient safety and protect public health. Together, we will prepare you to face the complexities of modern healthcare with confidence and competence.

Graduates of our program will be equipped to deliver high-quality care, embrace innovation and evidence-based practices, and lead interprofessional teams to drive transformative change in the field of infection prevention and control.

We look forward to welcoming you to ALCNS’s Master of Science in Infection Prevention and Control program and to our vibrant community of dedicated professionals.

Warm regards,
Dr Siriwan Lim

Application

There is one intake per academic year, in August. Application for AY 2025/2026 is currently not open. The minimum and normal candidature period is over four (4) semesters, 24 months and the maximum candidature is 48 months.

Programme Overview

The increasing complexity of healthcare systems, the emergence of new infectious diseases, and the global threat from antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections have contributed to morbidity, mortality, and increased healthcare costs in healthcare facilities. This underscored the critical need for trained infection preventionists who can lead and implement evidence-based and innovative infection prevention and control (IPC) strategies.

World Health Organisation (WHO) and Ministry of Health (MOH) are emphasising on the need for trained professionals to lead IPC related initiatives in healthcare institutions.

Our programmed is designed to address this demand and prepare transformative IPC leaders. This program aims to equip graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary to assume leadership roles in IPC initiatives/projects, make informed clinical decisions, implement innovative IPC strategies, conduct effective IPC training for hospital personnel, and work collaboratively with healthcare team to contribute to enhancing patient safety and protecting public health.

Aims of Programme

This programme will prepare graduates to take on pivotal roles at the acute, intermediate and long term healthcare settings. They will be well positioned to hold leadership roles such as IPC Program Managers/Directors and Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Managers.

They will also be qualified for roles in public health agencies, research institutions, and global health organizations where they can influence policy and practice on a broader scale. Upon completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate competency in infection prevention and control practices and standards.
  2. Develop infection prevention and control measures through knowledge of epidemiology, microbiology, and immunology.
  3. Drive change and influence policy and practice in infection prevention.
  4. Address complex infection control challenges through evidence-based practices and sound clinical decision.
  5. Lead innovative infection prevention and control quality improvement projects.
  6. Design and conduct infection prevention and control training programme.
  7. Advocate collaboration to address the global issues in infection prevention and control.
  8. Integrate research knowledge to advance infection prevention and control practices.
