As the Programme Director of the Master of Nursing programme at the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies and an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), Associate Professor Zhou Wentao is known for her contributions to APN and clinical training.
A/Prof Zhou selected as an international ambassador of the AANP.
Associate Professor Zhou Wentao from the National University of Singapore’s Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies (NUS Nursing), has been selected as an international ambassador of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). She is the first ambassador to be chosen from Southeast Asia.
A/Prof Zhou (second from right) attended the AANP Conference with other international ambassadors from 21 June to 26 June 2022.
Alongside Singapore’s representative A/Prof Zhou, eight awardees were presented with the AANP International Ambassador Award in the 2022 AANP Conference in Orlando, Florida from 21 June to 26 June 2022. They represent eight countries, comprising Brazil, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania.
The AANP is the largest professional membership organisation for nurse practitioners (NPs) of all specialties. Representing the interests of more than 325,000 licensed NPs in the U.S, AANP stands to advance health policy, promote and establish high standards in practice, education and research, to best serve patients and other healthcare consumers.
The six-day trip was an eye-opening one for A/Prof Zhou, who garnered many heartening insights.
“It is a dynamic and brain provoking conference. It is a conference full of energy, full of passion and full of humanity. I have been deeply touched by how passionate they (NPs) are to advocate for their practice rights, patient care accessibility, equality and quality,” she says.
She also mentions the fruitful learning of dedicated leadership, new practice guidelines and research, as well as the advancement of telemedicine.
Upon reflection, her appreciation for Singapore’s healthcare system, and the quality structure and systems in place for APN training deepened. She also emphasises on the importance of adapting elements from overseas practice to Singapore’s healthcare system, culture, and population needs.
Her position as an AANP International Ambassador gives her the leverage to build global connections, facilitating promotion and collaboration.
“I foresee the future consisting of international collaboration to uplift advanced nursing practice and develop APNs with global perspectives, and I hope to create more opportunities for us to learn from those well-established APN training, APN practice centres and APN research institutes.”
Moving on, A/Prof Zhou will behoming in on a few research areas related to APN, including education, professional development and clinical outcomes and policy changes.
