I joined the National University of Singapore in 2006 as a pioneer lecturer where I helped to lay the foundation for the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies (NUS Nursing), and where I began to establish the use of simulation for undergraduate nursing education. In navigating better ways to deliver simulation, I enter into the use of virtual reality, artificial intelligence and serious games.
My PRIME research focuses on Patient safety with emphasis on: Recognizing and responding to clinical deterioration; Interprofessional collaboration and education; Manpower workforce and development; and Experiential learning using simulation.
I have led the development and evaluation of simulation-based educational programmes including e-RAPIDS (Rescuing A Patient In Deterioration Situation) and CREATIVE (Create Real-time And Teamwork In Virtual Environment) which were translated into curriculums and licensed to overseas institutions. I was also involved in the development of several psychometric measurement tools related to clinical deterioration, and one (known as V-scale) was widely used across the world with translation into multiple languages.
I have gained support from several research grants with a total of over S$4 million (US$ 3 million) funding as a Principal or Co-investigator. I have strived to publish high quality papers and earned myself an H-index over 25 (Scopus) and Field Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) above 2. I have been invited as an overseas speaker to share my research work. Currently I am an associate editor of Clinical Simulation in Nursing.
At the height of the coronavirus pandemic in April to July 2020, I answered the call from the Ministry of Health and returned to clinical service to serve as a frontline nurse at the pandemic intensive care unit (ICU) of the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NDIC).
