Providing lifelong health care education
Project Sapulot is an Overseas Community Involvement Project (OCIP) that is based in Sapulot located in Sabah, Malaysia. Our project’s mission is to provide accessible, lifelong healthcare awareness and knowledge to the students in Sapulot.
Since 2017, the members have provided annual health screenings, educational lessons and home visits to less-privileged students and villagers. We are committed not only to ensuring the academic success of the students but also to extending their worldview through education and awareness. This is especially important since our beneficiaries may not have access to health care knowledge outside of their villages. The students in Sapulot have benefited from our project’s outreach efforts over the years through improved academic performance and personal development.
The project works in collaboration with three schools to provide education lessons and health screening to the students who have limited access to healthcare. We serve around 400 students in Sapulot, ranging from Primary 3 to Secondary 4 levels. Project Sapulot was started by NUS Nursing students at the Alice Lee School of Nursing Centre (NUS Nursing), our target groups are three schools in Sabah, namely Sekolah Kebangsaan and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan, Sapulot as well as the Sekolah Kebangsaan Lotong. Sapulot is a town situated along the Sapulot River in the Interior Division of Sabah, whereas Lotong is a village situated nearby to the localities Katud and Kampung Kandawayan.
The education lessons that are prepared are geared towards providing our beneficiary students with information about a selection of subjects that are important for their assimilation into modern society, as well as motivating them to pursue further studies. Additionally, Project Sapulot also helps students to identify their strengths and weaknesses in order to help them improve. The knowledge gained will allow them to develop as better students and citizens, thus contributing to the development of the community.
For the AY21/22, our Education team created a holistic lesson plan with various topics such as English, Geography, Women and Men’s Health, Skin Diseases, Careers & Resumes as well as a Motivation lesson . As these were topics not widely covered in the students’ syllabus, our lessons helped to expand their worldviews, and equipped our beneficiaries with knowledge essential to their assimilation into today’s society. The lessons also guided the students in the exploration of their knowledge of themselves to assist their development into better students and individuals.
